Yongsan, Seoul

Yuseong, Daejeon

Haeundae, Busan

Samsan Ulsan

XIAHTIC

Myeong Dong street downtown Seoul.

The snow’s been late coming this winter, but now it is here and it is relentless. Still a long way from developing my snow legs, I am determined that nobody see just how unsteady I am on the icy roads. Everything is on a hill here, and I take tiny shuffles down the slope. Korea is the land of hills and nobody is moving too quickly.

The snowfall is doing a good job of hiding the endless concrete. The bright flashing neon lights lining both sides of the street shine on through. Children – in Korea always out playing in the middle of the night – run in groups, throwing poorly-formed snowballs and slipping over on the new ice again and again. It is a strange and wintry fairyland.

We arrive at bright yellow door of an otherwise traditional building, and our large group removes our shoes and settles around the table. It is only our first destination for the night: in Korea there is a “three venue rule” that dictates a night out is not complete until revelers have been to three places; perhaps a galbi (barbequed meat) restaurant, a hof (pub) and a noraebang (singing room). Hot coals are placed under the (rack?) and steam rises up as meat is barbequed in front of us.

The Farewell Party Begins

After living in Korea for some time now none of this is foreign to me, but tonight is different; tonight is my farewell party.

Yes, I am yet another English teacher finishing yet another 1-year contract at a private language academy, or hagwon as they are known here. Teaching in Korea is a phenomenon that is not going away any time soon. The options for the “Native English Teacher” are endless. Adults enroll for classes before and after work, while children who are still not old enough to attend regular school attend English kindergartens. Young and old and everybody in between are desperate to improve their English skills, be it for business, study, or just to keep up with their peers.

I watch my boss Mr. Kim eye the soju bottle again as the ajumma (the married lady of the establishment) comes over to hack up the rest of the meat with a pair of scissors. My legs are cramping up as I sit cross-legged on the cushion, but there is no room on either side of me to stretch out. I bash the foot that has gone to sleep while I watch in horror as Mr. Kim fills my shot glass once more.

Eventually the food stops coming out. We are putting our shoes back on when there is a commotion I cannot understand. The owner is chasing after us and gesturing back inside, and before we know it shoes are back on the shelves and we are sitting back on the cushions around the table. We are unable—it seems—to leave until we have been served big bowls of strawberries. This has never happened before, and it is suggested that it is something special for me.

On Expatriate Life in Korea

I am not the only foreigner in this neighborhood, but there are few others. It can be isolating, and yet it can also work in my favor, with people happy to help me with anything from paying bills to putting groceries in shopping bags when I start to look a little lost.

The expatriate network is there if you need it. Seoul—and the rest of the country—is a center for foreign business, with everything from the major automotive and technological companies to the EFL industry attracting thousands upon thousands of people from other countries. As a result, people from almost any Western country will find a support network to suit their needs for everything from assistance finding imported goods from home, to the organization of social gatherings to reminisce about home.

The Party Continues

My Korean is far from stellar, but in the rushed conversation that takes place outside the restaurant I hear the word noraebang and I start to feel a little queasy. We are off on our way before I have an opportunity to protest.

Many of the restaurants are still pumping music over loudspeakers and onto the street, the steam of sizzling meat blowing out into biting air. It is just our luck that Siberian wind has chosen now to start blowing through the city. We reach a tiny doorway in a darker part of the main street. The gruff little man at the desk remembers us, no doubt because our group has foreigners in tow.

Noraebang. For some crazy reason I thought I might be able to avoid it tonight. It is best explained as karaoke in a private room—the word translates as “singing room.” Mr. Kim hands out tambourines. I try and hide behind the table in the middle of the booth while a tray of beer appears out of nowhere and is placed on our table. Indistinguishable multicolored snacks arrive in little bowls. No matter how badly people sing they are awarded with a high score splashed across the screen at the end of each song. I shake my tambourine and hope they do not notice I have still not sung a single note. This time our drinks are left unfinished as we head off to a hof.

At the hof we are ushered into a tiny curtained cubicle that we must to pass through the kitchen to reach. By now a few of our group are looking like they would rather be in bed, and the revelry slows considerably. Though it is well past midnight and we probably should have eased up on the food and drinks some time ago, everybody is still bowing and showing respect to superiors where appropriate.

The Old and New Coexist

Old and new sit firmly together here, and I found as an English teacher I was expected to bumble along and take part in the Korean traditions as well as the more recent cultural imports. There is always a huge margin for error afforded to non-Koreans, and if my rice cakes for Chuseok (a holiday often described as “Thanksgiving”) were a little misshapen, or if I did not quite get the rules for one of the traditional games I was playing, I was always forgiven. “Hanbok”—the distinctive and voluminous national dress—is still worn for many an occasion, with the locals thinking nothing of changing from the latest Western fashions into ancient-styled silk and back again.

The officially released news from Bae Yong Joon’s agency… that’s mean is not rumor… is a fact…

So Hyun Joong really moved to another entertainment agency… Bae Yong Joon’s Key East

The official photo is out …

The only fact is Hyun Joong is not DSP’s artist anymore…

SS501 is not disbanded as of this moment

For some assurance, at the last of the news mention…

Hyun Joong is still committed to SS501 other members’ willingness… and himself for the team continuance

So if our boys do not want to break.. he will continue to be in the music activities…

I believe he won’t leave just like that.. he is still our trusted leader…

For now, let’s keep our hope for the best… ^^

SS501 Kim Hyung Joon may sign with Kang Ji-Hwan agency

Boy band SS501 member Kim Hyung-joon is looking into signing with actor Kang Ji-wan’s agency S Plus Entertainment.

An official at S Plus told Asia Economic Daily over the phone on Wednesday that they are reviewing whether to sign an exclusive contract with the singer which will support his activities in Korea, although emphasizing “nothing has been decided.”

The official also explained, “S Plus’ headquarters in Japan currently handles various affairs for Kim in Japan but that’s different from signing an exlusive contract.”

S Plus supports several ‘Hallyu,’ or Korean Waves stars in Japan including Song Seung-heon, Kang Ji-hwan and Lee Jun-ki, either managing their career in the country, creating their Japanese websites or promoting their businesses.

If Kim signs with S Plus, he will become the third member of the five-man band to leave DSP Media, the agency his contract ended with in early June.

The group’s leader Kim Hyung-joon was the first to find a new nest, signing with Bae Yong-joong’s agency KEYEAST soon after his previous contract ended and Park Jung-min just last week joined CNR Media, a firm set up jointly by major Taiwanese drama producer Comic-Ritz and Korea’s ROY MEDIA.

The boys have reassured fans SS501 will not disband despite going separate ways but the future of the band has been up in the air ever since.

Other members Heo Young-saeng and Kim Kyu-jong too have yet to make a decision.

SS501 has been one of the most popular bands in Korea and in several countries in Asia since forming in 2005.

SS501 Park Jungmin move to new agency CNR Media

With the contract with agency DSP Media coming to an end, SS501 Park JungMin will move to a new agency.

He added, “Was troubled over it and after giving much thought and discussion, I’ve decided. Now I’ll continue anew from SS501 as Park JungMin (Of course I’m always SS501′s JungMin. JungMin in SS501).”

” Even though I’m very worried and nervous, let there be strength for JungMin who is going to take his first step. I will continue to work hard and improve myself.”

Meanwhile, SS501 leader Kim HyunJoong also recently moved to Key East Entertainment. Currently other members Kim KyuJong, Heo YeongSaeng and Kim HyungJoon are preparing to move to their new agency.

YANG YO-SEOP ( BEAST)

My name is Yang Yo-seop

I was born on January 5, 1990
I have one sister. She’s a smaller version of me — both face and body –with long hair. My mom and dad actually look alike too. You would notice that we’re family even from a far distance.
I first started practicing singing after listening to Brian McKnight’s songs. And since then, I’ve listened to songs with similar vibes but I thought about it hard and realized I shouldn’t favor a certain genre of song. That’s why I’ve started listening to dance and rock music too.
In high school I was part of the rock band. I mainly did hard rock or metal back then but I had wanted to try out modern rock too. My seniors didn’t allow it because they said it would make the mood depressing but it’s a genre that I still want to try if given the chance.
I’m like my dad so I’m actually very clumsy when it comes to dancing. I used to not be able to dance at all. I barely dance now after much practice. (Du-jun: He’s the fastest learner now. Jun-hyung: He even comes up with choreography.)
I had my hairstyle changed big time and I like it because I think it looks good on me. So much that even my group members say they feel awkward when they see photographs of me with black hair now. I keep getting told to get my hair bleached but it’s a bit disappointing too. Since I’m Asian, my original black hair will keep growing…
I honestly don’t think I’m manly or sexy… I really lack in those aspects. And I used to hate hearing from people that I’m cute. But it’s the sort of person I’ve come to be portrayed as so I’ve accepted it.
When we’re by ourselves, Dong-woon is really funny. The producer for our reality show said Dong-woon and I are promising figures for the entertainment show business. But he becomes boring when the camera goes on. That’s why he’s become more awkward and appears less on the show. He’s about to go dumb now. And has also been aging. Haha.
Du-jun has a strong sense of responsibility and even if a certain issue or task has been completed, he’ll only be satisfied after checking through the whole process himself. I think we would’ve not been able to do anything without him — no interviews, no music shows. He’s the first person that wakes up in the morning and wakes everyone else up.

News from DSP

Baby on taiwan airport....

Kim Hyung Joon left Taiwan without his partner Park Jung Min, maybe he still have shopping, shoppine is his hobby after any event from other country.

Looking at Kim Hyung Joon picture he is like the duck in his shirt, but a very handsome duck. He's pouting his lips that shows him more cuter.

It has been known that Kim Hyun Joong has left SS501 and DSP entertainment as his 5 year exclusive contract has expired earlier this month and signs with Keyeast Entertainment.

Keyeast said that after the contract ended with DSP on June 7 to 12, Kim Hyun Joong has been receiving a lot of love calls from other agencies and later decided to transfer to Keyeast Entertainment which is known for it's world class actors and actresses.

However, There is no conflict with DSP nor with the members, Kim Hyun Joong transferred due to his own interest. Keyeast said on the 29th, "Kim Hyun Joong is going to maintain his good relationships with the members of SS501".

DSP Entertainment said that they are unsure whether to continue SS501 with 4 members or recruit a new member, or such, they have no plans for SS501's next step yet.

Accordingly, When the contract ended on June 7, Kim Hyun Joong will be having a solo career, but the 4 members of SS501 have renewed their contracts with their current agency DSP Entertainment, and the members have already agreed on releasing an album as a group in the future.

DSP Entertainment are still considering their options on the next step of SS501 without their leader Kim Hyun Joong.

Picture Summer Fan with Wonder Girl

The five retro-glam cuties from the Wonder Girls are huge pop sensations in Korea and Asia, and are beginning the rumblings of an American takeover as well. In just a few short years, the Wonder Girls have had multiple hits in Korea, and their signature '60s style and gorgeous voices brought them worldwide attention.

During the summer of 2009, the Wonder Girls toured with The Jonas Brothers and hit cities across the US with the hottest K-pop boy group 2PM! Now in 2010, they’re gearing up to blow up, performing with Justin Bieber and adding 2AM to their tour. They've also evolved as fashion icons:

In their new single “2 Different Tears,” the Wonder Girls fast-forward their retro aesthetic, jumping two decades to the '80s. Watch them as they even make acid-wash look cute.

Kibum UKISS is an outcast???

Apparently, U-KISS's Kim Kibum was being outcast by his own band members.

U-KISS showed their exceptional teamwork in each episode of the real food variety SBS E!TV "Chef's Kiss". However, the head chef, Teacher Khim (Kim Hee Tae), made some changes by changing the team's members. During that time, all the dissastifactions and complaints that the members had hidden all this while came out.

The members pointed their fingers on Kibum as his team always ended up losing during the cooking battle, and because of this, the members were avoiding to be on the same team as Kibum for this new team selection, which left Kibum in confusion and tension.

Meanwhile, in this episode, U-KISS went to the duck farm to find new ingredients. They wore the farmer's clothes while showing off their extraordinary fashion sense, and boasted by singing out loud and dancing in that outfit. They added on to the fun by adding the rule that the member who was ranked last will have to clean up the duck's dung.

Moreover, in this episode too, Kevin will be revealing his house for the first time, where he showed his cooking skills with his beautiful mother and sister. The annoying U-KISS members went to Kevin's room and took out all his accessories and underwears, which created huge laughters on the set. This full-of-laughter episode will be aired this Friday July 2nd at 12 o'clock.

FANMEETING UKISS IN MALAYSIA 19 .6.2010

So there’s still no confirmation about SHINee’s fan meeting in May. I think we can happily put that under the Rumour File and forget about it because apparently, U-KISS is coming to town.

The 7-member South Korean boyband is expected to hold a private fan meeting in Malaysia in June.

In Malaysia?: U-KISS to give Malaysian fans a smooch?

Geneses Dream Entertainment, the event management company that is bringing the Bingeul Bingeul boys in, made the announcement recently. Details of the event are after the jump:

Date: 19th June, 2010
Time: 2pm – 5:30pm
Venue: Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Plenary Hall
What will happen?: Fan meeting, performances, interaction with fans & autograph session

VIP Seat Packages (at RM350 per pop) will be opened for sale on March 28 (tomorrow) at 10am. You need to send in an e-mail or some such to secure a VIP package. Other seat packages include Ace (RM180), Knight (RM150) and Vampire (RM120).

Geneses Dream Entertainment looks kind of legit but how come there’s no booth or counter to get the seat packages? Why do it through e-mail? Also, I read the company's "About Us" page and am I the only one who thinks they sound like C.I. Entertainment?

For details, check out the Geneses Dream Entertainment website or their Facebook page.
